WIC Works Wonders

WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. It is available to pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, and children under the age of 5 who meet the current income guidelines and have a medical or nutritional risk, (i.e. overweight, underweight, anemia, low in Vitamin A, etc.). As of April 1, 2009, a family of four can have a gross monthly household income up to $3,400/month and still qualify for WIC. For current income information click on:

http://egov.oregon.gov/dhs/ph/wic

You are automatically income eligible for WIC if you currently receive TANF, Food Stamps, or the Oregon Health Plan (OHP).

Participants in WIC receive nutrition education and counseling specific to their increased nutritional needs during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and early childhood growth. Vouchers for supplemental foods are given monthly. The foods are specific foods high in protein, calcium, iron and Vitamins A and C, such as milk, cheese, eggs, peanut butter, dried beans, iron fortified cereal, high Vitamin C fruit juice and infant formula (only if needed). The vouchers are then redeemed at local grocery stores participating in WIC.  Mothers who are exclusively breastfeeding their infant receive additional foods, including fresh carrots and tuna.

Fathers, grandparents, foster parents or other guardians may apply for WIC for their children.

WIC WORKS WONDERS. Since WIC was started in 1974, it has gained a reputation for being the premiere public health program. Studies, review and reports demonstrate that the WIC program is cost effective in protecting or improving the health and nutritional status of WIC participants. The following are some health outcomes WIC helps to improve:

* birth outcomes

* diet and diet-related outcomes

* infant feeding practices, including breastfeeding

* immunization rates

* savings in health care costs

* promotion of physical activity

Referrals can be made for services needed in the community or to other county services. We also have a Registered Dietitian on staff to help with any special nutritional needs.

If you have any questions or would like to apply for WIC please call our office to schedule an appointment. Evening appointments may be available upon request in the Medford office.
