Don Skundrick was elected to the Jackson County Board of Commissioners in November of 2010 and sworn into office on January 3, 2011. Commissioner Skundrick serves as the Chair of the Board for 2013.
For the 2013 calendar year, Commissioner Skundrick is the Board liaison to the County Administrator and County Audit Committee as well as the following County departments and/or committees: Health and Human Services (including Early Learning Council, Local Alcoholism and Drug Planning Committee/LADPC, Mental Health Advisory Committee, Public Health Advisory Committee, and Veterans' Advisory Committee), Roads and Parks (including County Roads Advisory Committee, Jackson County Bicycle Committee, Parks Advisory Committee, and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee), and the Board of Commissioners' Economic Development Advisory Committee.
Commissioner Skundrick also serves as liaison to the various City Councils in Jackson County and the following: Association of Oregon Counties (AOC), Governor's Infrastructure Finance Authority Board, Governor's Regional Solutions Team (RST), Job Council, Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Rogue Valley Area Commission on Transportation (RVACT), Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development, Inc. (SOREDI), and Transportation Advocacy Committee (TRADCO).
Commissioner Skundrick was born in Billings, Montana, in 1942. His dad was a first generation American; his mother and father emigrated from Serbia in the late 1800s to Butte, Montana. Don's dad was a railroad man, brakeman, conductor, and yardmaster working mostly for the Union Pacific. As such, they moved around as he "bid" on work with the railroad based on his seniority. Don attended 13 different schools during his 12 years in primary and secondary education. The last stop was a move from Portland down to Ashland in 1955. Don's 13th and final school was Talent High and he was in its last graduation class of 1960.
After graduation, Don joined the United States Navy as a Radioman and Cryptographer serving in the Far East, including Vietnam, and was honorably discharged in 1964. Upon his return to Oregon, he enrolled at Southern Oregon State College. During that time, the two best things in his life happened -- he met and married his lovely wife, Sharon, and he was hired by MC Lininger & Sons (later to be known consecutively as Lininger-Tru Mix, or LTM, and Knife River Materials, KRM). After almost 45 years, Don no longer works for KRM; however, after almost 45 wonderful years, he and Sharon are still married and going towards forever!
While working for MCL/LTM/KRM, Don had the wonderful privilege of working with some of the community's greatest organizations as a board member and, in many cases, as board chair -- American Red Cross, Southern Oregon Drug Awareness (SODA), Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development, Inc. (SOREDI), Medford/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Consumer Credit Counseling Services, Bear Creek & Greater Medford Rotaries, and as a Medford Water Commissioner. Don continues to serve on the Providence Hospital Foundation Board as well as the Ginger Rogers Craterian Theater Board. In addition, over the past 30 years, he has also served on State, regional, and national boards.
With all of this said, Commissioner Skundrick looks forward to the new challenges ahead as a member of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. There is much to learn and do and he welcomes the opportunities to serve his fellow County residents to the best of his ability.
"My vision for the County is twofold -- to create a business friendly environment to create job opportunities for this and future generations and, in doing so, make the process as transparent and as customer/tax payer friendly as possible."
